Where I see the cosmic joke underlying all this is that to build a parameterized model of a space of contexts will require good scientific theories of the various components of the contexts. Of course those contexts have their own contexts. To understand one thing requires one to understand everything. Still, some kind of Bayesian model for a degree of validity should be a very practical tool for many well-constrained problems, like maybe drug trials.

I am trying to think of a reasonable low cost first chapel to get the cathedral idea going. I am thinking of maybe the relationship between the watt and the calorie, i.e. the equivalence of mechanical and thermal energy, the first law of thermodynamics. Important and not too too complicated. Easy to get in the ballpark I expect, but hard to get very precise.

Another piece of the idea is to make the experimental apparatus really beautiful, inspiring, to really embody the insight.

Pushing the analogy another step... I think of experiments as corresponding to meditation. Meditation has two components, shamatha and vipashyana. Shamatha is like constructing, arranging, and calibrating equipment. Vipaashyana is like the actual measurement where the nature of reality is revealed.JimKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16167191806249119508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2688138290971915830.post-57205193477751062712016-04-04T12:07:52.402-07:002016-04-04T12:07:52.402-07:00This paper might be related to your validity idea:...This paper might be related to your validity idea: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1411.3013v2.pdf.

While I find your Science Cathedral idea stimulating, I think it would make the vast majority of both religious people and scientific people very nervous! I actually think of Buddhism as "the science of discontent," to use a phrase from Frank Herbert, but many "religions," unlike Buddhism, are faith-based and their adherents could possibly feel your Science Cathedral was an attempt to supplant the faith-based approach. I myself consider that a worthwhile effort!

And, of course, most scientists would probably think you were trying to suggest that science is just another religion, which, depending on how one defines religion, it could very well be. Certainly, as you partially explore, there are a great number of parallels between the two!PonderSeekDiscoverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00913503952284529871noreply@blogger.com
